Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It typically begins in childhood and may continue into adulthood.
Individuals with ADHD may have difficulty focusing, staying organized, following instructions, or sitting still, and they may act impulsively or talk excessively.

The exact cause is not fully understood but is believed to involve genetic and neurological factors. ADHD can impact academic performance, relationships, and daily functioning, but it is manageable through behavioral therapy, educational support, medication, and sometimes speech or occupational therapy, especially when communication challenges are present.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development.
There are three main types of ADHD, based on which symptoms are strongest:
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
Difficulty sustaining attention
Easily distracted
Disorganized
Often forgetful in daily activities
Frequently makes careless mistakes
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
Fidgeting or squirming
Inability to stay seated or still
Talking excessively
Interrupting others
Impatience or difficulty waiting
Combined Presentation
Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity are present.

Effect of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Listening and Auditory Processing

Difficulty with auditory attention: Children and adults with ADHD may struggle to focus on spoken language, especially in noisy environments (e.g., classrooms, group conversations).

Auditory processing issues: While not the same as Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), individuals with ADHD can have overlapping symptoms—like trouble understanding directions, distinguishing similar sounds, or following conversations.

Easily distracted by background noise, which affects listening comprehension and verbal communication.

Speech and Language Development

Delayed language development: Some children with ADHD may show delays in vocabulary growth, sentence formation, or expressive language skills.
Pragmatic language difficulties (social use of language): They might interrupt frequently, talk excessively, or have trouble staying on topic in conversations.
Difficulty organizing verbal thoughts, leading to disorganized or tangential speech.

Hearing Evaluations and ADHD

A child with ADHD might appear to have hearing loss because they don’t respond when spoken to—but in reality, they may simply be inattentive or distracted. Comprehensive audiological evaluations are often recommended to rule out hearing loss as a contributing factor to listening or language difficulties.

Diagnosis and Treatment

ADHD is a chronic condition that affects attention, self-regulation, and behavior. With early diagnosis and proper support, individuals with ADHD can thrive at school, work, and in social situations. ADHD can be effectively managed with a combination of:
Behavioral therapy
Parent training and support
Educational interventions
Medication
Speech and language therapy (if communication issues are also present)

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) often work with children with ADHD to
Improve listening skills and auditory memory
Enhance expressive and receptive language
Develop social communication skills
Teach self-regulation strategies during speech/language tasks
