A voice disorder occurs when voice quality, pitch, loudness, or flexibility is inappropriate for a person's age, gender, cultural background, or location — and when it affects the ability to communicate effectively.
“Voice Disorder” means the absence of voice or presence of abnormal quality, pitch, resonance, loudness, or duration. Abnormalities can involve one or more of the vocal parameters: habitual pitch, pitch range, loudness, vocal note quality, resonance, flexibility and stamina.
As a result, disordered voices can range from being functionally ineffective through varying degrees of inefficiency to being merely aesthetically unpleasing in their least severe form. Whatever the underlying etiology, these vocal changes are the manifestation of disordered laryngeal, respiratory and vocal tract function, which might reflect structural, neurological, psychological and behavioral problems as well as systemic conditions.
Most voice disorders can be acquired from infancy throughout the lifespan, although a small proportion is congenital because of fetal abnormalities of the vocal tract or related systems.
Our voice is created by vocal folds in our larynx (or ‘voice box’). Vocal folds are thin bands of muscle that vibrate to create sound used for speaking. Most of us have experienced changes in our voice during a cold. You may have even lost it after cheering at a big football match, or shouting at a concert. That’s because the thin muscles that create sound have been strained or inflamed, causing problems with their normal vibration. Vocal fold damage is usually caused by:
Excessive talking or shouting loudly Lack of water and hydration Overuse – talking too much Using harsh ‘sound effects’ during play Straining our vocal folds and surrounding muscles Common infections such as a cold or laryngitis
Sometimes there are other structural or medical issues going on. Normal voice production needs a precise balance of vibration, airflow, and muscle strength. Throat nodules or polyps, chronic upper airway inflammation, and acid reflux can all damage vocal folds and inhibit our ability to talk. Neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, or muscular dystrophy can also impair speech.
To help the patient speak as clearly and effectively as possible, and use alternative communication strategies if needed—so they can engage fully in daily life.
Vedanta Speech and Hearing Centre plays a crucial role in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of Voice Disorder.
Hoarseness or breathy voice Voice fatigue or strain Pitch breaks (sudden high or low voice changes) Reduced vocal range Pain or discomfort while speaking Tremor or shaky voice Voice cracks (not related to puberty) Roughness or breathiness when speaking Strained or strangled quality of voice Pitch is too high/low Inconsistent or unsteady loudness Weak sounding voice, trouble raising volume Voice sounds “wet” when speaking Voice sounds raspy or hoarse when speaking Voice sounds shrill or shaky when speaking Loss of voice (aphonia)
Polyps, nodules or cysts on the vocal cords.
Muscle Tension Dysphonia: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is one of the most common types of voice disorders. It occurs when there is excess tension in the muscles surrounding your vocal cords. This can be caused by irritation of the vocal cords, voice misuse, or stress. Symptoms include a hoarse or strained voice, changes in voice pitch, throat pain, or voice fatigue with use. MTD is often diagnosed by and Otolaryngologist or ENT.
Laryngeal Trauma. This occurs as a result of either the misuse/abuse of the voice or trauma to the regions of the neck.
Congenital Dysphonia. A condition resulting from masses or lesions or structural abnormality to the vocal folds or surrounding areas.
Spasmodic Dysphonia. This is when vocal folds are open or closed too much, affecting the vibration pattern for speaking. Patients have a strained or “squeezed” quality. It occurs when a person makes an effort to gain loudness.
Neurogenic Dysphonia. Resulting from nerve lesions or disease to the vocal folds or surrounding areas
Vocal Tremor: Is one of the most common neurologic movement disorders. Individuals with vocal tremor experience rhythmic movement of some of the muscles used to produce voice. This results in an involuntary variance in vocal loudness and pitch.
Laryngectomy. Total or partial removal of the larynx.
