Hearing loss is a partial or total inability to hear sounds in one or both ears. It can occur at any age and may result from a variety of causes, ranging from birth defects to age-related changes or exposure to loud noises. Hearing loss can affect the ability to understand speech and can impact communication, learning, and social interactions. The severity of hearing loss can vary, from mild difficulty hearing certain sounds to complete deafness.
This type occurs when sound waves cannot efficiently reach the inner ear due to problems in the outer or middle ear. Common causes include ear infections, fluid in the ear, earwax buildup, perforated eardrum, or issues with the small bones in the middle ear (ossicles).
Treatment often involves medical or surgical interventions, such as earwax removal, medications, or surgery.
This type of hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve, which transmits sound signals to the brain. It is the most common type of permanent hearing loss and can be caused by aging (presbycusis), prolonged exposure to loud noise, head trauma, infections, or genetic conditions.
Treatment Sensorineural hearing loss is typically permanent, and while it can be managed with hearing aids or cochlear implants, it cannot usually be cured
This type involves a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. It means that there are problems in both the outer/middle ear and the inner ear or auditory nerve.
Treatment may involve a combination of methods, including surgery, hearing aids, or other interventions.
Mild: Often involves medical or surgical interventions, such as earwax removal, medications, or surgery.
Moderate: Difficulty hearing normal conversation without amplification.
Severe: Difficulty hearing loud speech or sounds without hearing aids or devices.
Profound: Little to no ability to hear even very loud sounds.
Genetic factors: Some people are born with hearing loss due to inherited conditions.
Aging: Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) typically affects high-frequency sounds.
Noise exposure: Long-term exposure to loud sounds, such as concerts or machinery, can damage the hair cells in the inner ear.
Infections and illnesses: Certain infections, like ear infections, meningitis, or rubella, can affect hearing.
Head trauma: Physical injuries to the head or ear can cause hearing loss.
Medications: Some medications, especially antibiotics or chemotherapy drugs, can cause hearing damage as a side effect.
