Stuttering (also known as stammering, particularly in British English) is a fluency disorder that affects the flow and rhythm of speech. People who stutter know what they want to say, but they have difficulty producing speech smoothly and without interruption. The flow of speech is interrupted by involuntary disruptions.
These may include: Repetitions (e.g., Sound: “B-b-b-ball”, "I-I-I want...") Prolongations (e.g., Stretching out sounds: “Sssssssun is here") Blocks (A pause or stop in speech: “I want a… (pause)… cookie”) Syllable (“I want to go-go-go”)
Secondary Behaviors (often develop over time): Facial tension, blinking, jaw clenching, Head movements or tapping, Avoiding certain words or situations, Substituting words to avoid stuttering
