Fluency refers to the smooth, effortless, and natural flow of speech.
A fluency disorder occurs when this flow is interrupted by disruptions such as repetitions, prolongations, or blocks. The most common fluency disorder is stuttering.
Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by:
Repetitions: "I-I-I want to go"
Prolongations: "Sssssssometimes"
Blocks: A pause where the person is unable to produce sound
Secondary behaviors: Eye blinking, facial tension, or avoidance of words
It may also involve fear, anxiety, or loss of confidence, especially in social settings.
1. Fluency Shaping Therapy : Teaches new patterns of speaking that promote fluent speech
Techniques include: Slowed rate of speech, Easy onset of voice, Light articulatory contacts
Goal: Speak fluently at all times, even if speech sounds less natural at first
2. Stuttering Modification Therapy : Helps the speaker manage stuttering moments more easily and with less fear
Techniques: Cancellations (pausing and repeating a word more smoothly), Pull-outs (easing out of a stutter mid-word), Preparatory sets (adjusting speech before a difficult word)
Goal: Reduce struggle and tension during stuttering
3. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) : Addresses emotional aspects of stuttering: fear, shame, and avoidance, Builds communication confidence
4. Desensitization & Counseling : Helps individuals reduce sensitivity to stuttering, Encourages open communication about the disorder
5. Assistive Devices & Apps : Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) devices, Speech therapy apps for practice and support
