Swallowing Disorder, medically known as dysphagia, is a condition where a person has difficulty swallowing safely and effectively. It can affect the ability to swallow solids, liquids, or saliva, leading to problems with eating, drinking, and even breathing. Dysphagia can occur at any stage of swallowing, which has three main phases:
Oral Phase – moving food or liquid from the mouth to the throat.
Pharyngeal Phase – moving the food through the throat while protecting the airway.
Esophageal Phase – moving the food down the esophagus into the stomach.
Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD), also known as paradoxical vocal fold motion dysfunction (PVFMD), occurs when the vocal cords close during breathing when they should be in an open position. This obstructive pattern makes it hard for a person to breathe. VCD is often misdiagnosed as asthma. An ENT doctor diagnoses VCD.
Our program is designed to reduce hoarseness or improve voice, effort, endurance, pitch range, or loudness. We have certifications in areas of voice disorders. Voice therapy is about learning how to change your voice habits and finding your way back to your natural, powerful voice.
If your vocal quality, pitch, or loudness is affecting your ability to communicate effectively, then you may benefit from voice therapy. Treatment is also appropriate for those who experience frequent discomfort or pain when speaking or singing. Many of our voice clients are teachers, singers, attorneys, salespeople, and fitness instructors, as these occupational groups are at most at risk for developing voice disorders.

Dysphagia often coexists with speech and language difficulties, especially in neurological disorders (stroke, Parkinson’s, ALS). Swallowing and speech share many muscles and neural pathways; treating one can support the other.
