Aphasia and Dysarthria are both speech and language disorders, but they affect different systems and have different causes.
Aphasia A language disorder caused by damage to the brain’s language centers (typically in the left hemisphere), most often after a stroke, brain injury, or neurological disease.

Dysarthria A motor speech disorder caused by weakness, paralysis, or poor coordination of the muscles used for speaking. It’s due to damage in the nervous system affecting motor control
Slurred, slow, or mumbled speech, Weakness in lips, tongue, vocal cords, or diaphragm, May also affect breathing, voice, and articulation,
Language and comprehension are normal – the person knows what they want to say but can’t physically produce clear speech
Speech and hearing healthcare professionals, particularly speech-language pathologists (SLPs), play a vital role in the assessment and treatment of aphasia and dysarthria, both of which impair communication but in different ways.
In aphasia, a language disorder often caused by stroke or brain injury, SLPs focus on restoring or compensating for difficulties in speaking, understanding, reading, and writing through structured language therapy, communication strategies, and sometimes alternative communication tools.
In dysarthria, a motor speech disorder resulting from weakened or uncoordinated speech muscles, SLPs work to improve speech clarity through muscle strengthening, breath control, articulation exercises, and the use of assistive technology when necessary.
Audiologists also contribute by identifying and managing any co-existing hearing loss, ensuring optimal communication access. Together, these professionals enhance patients' ability to communicate effectively, reduce frustration, and support social participation and quality of life.
